Saints March to 15-0 26 May 2017

A strong second half by the Wellington Saints has lifted them to 15-0, defeating the Mike Pero Nelson Giants 95-78.

Leon Henry grabbed 21 rebounds to go with his 10 points, and after missing three games, Tai Wesley, scored 23 points on 9-for-10 from the field in 16 minutes of court time.

Kyle Adnam returned to the Giants line-up to score 21, Finn Delany also had 21, and Dion Prewster added 16 against his former team

Nelson came out strong scoring 31 points in the first quarter, and led by as many as 12.  Nelson did the great job of pressuring the Saints, forcing them to commit uncharacteristic turnovers which led to easy transition buckets.

After the first quarter Wellington would show far more energy on the defensive end and Nelson’s offense, managing only 26 points combined in the second and third quarters compared to Wellington’s 51.

The visitors pushed their lead to as many as 25 points, making it 11 straight games where they have won by double-digits or more.

The loss puts the Giants at 4-11, and to make the playoffs they will have to win the remainder of their games and hope Canterbury lose all theirs.

Under Kevin Braswell, Wellington now extend their winning streak to 17, which passes the 2015 Southland Sharks side where he was a player for that won 16. They will now have a day’s rest before they travel to Auckland to play the James Blond Supercity Rangers who have won three on the trot.
