The Wellington Saints are pleased to announce that last year’s most valuable player Torrey Craig will be returning for a second season.
Craig was outstanding last season averaging 20.4 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 17 games for the Saints.
“Torrey is an amazing athlete and scorer who brings so much more than just scoring to a team. His rebounding for a guard is something that you see from people who are usually 7 foot tall. He's the complete team player and it's shown by what he's doing in the ANBL. He sacrifices his own individual talents for the betterment of the team and that's what I’m looking for here in Wellington,” said Saints Head Coach Kevin Braswell.
Playing the small forward position, Craig was arguably one of the most athletic players in the league competition and in particular was a home crowd favourite with his highlight reel dunks and blocks on bigger opponents.
Unfortunately, Craig suffered a severe knee injury against Waitakere only a couple of weeks out from the playoffs and although he returned to the playoffs his knee was not fully healed and required surgery at the conclusion of the season.
“He had a really good year last year in the NBL. He was the MVP of the league and if he hadn't suffered his injury I think it would have been a different title game last year,” Braswell said
Torrey is currently playing his second season with the Cairns Taipans in the Australian National League and is nearly averaging 12 points. Last week was a an good one for Craig who hit crucial free throws in the Taipans win over the NZ Breakers
“I’m very excited to get Torrey and the group here so we can get started. Will be a very fun year with this group. “
