Saints remain unbeaten with win over the Sharks

The Wellington Saints have extended their unbeaten start to win number seven with a 111-93 victory over the SIT Zerofees Sharks.

Corey Webster had 29 points, Tai Wesley had 23 and Shea Ili nearly produced a triple-double with a stat-line of 13 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and four steals for Wellington whose offense continues to roll, scoring 100 plus points in last four games.

It looked like it was going to be a tough challenge for Wellington when Southland opened the game with a 9-2 run, but the home side replied with a 34-7 run and ended the quarter up 36-18.

The Sharks were able to do a better defensive job in the second quarter restricting the Saints to 17 points, but still trailed by 16 at halftime which was not helped with key players Mitch Norton and Nick Kay both having foul trouble.

After the break, Southland managed to peg it back to ten points thanks to the outside shooting of Duane Bailey and Reuben Te Rangi. But Wellington pushed their lead back up to 16 going into the fourth.

A bucket by Webster and two straight threes from Jordan Ngatai widened the deficit to 22, which was enough to hold for the win.

Te Rangi had another strong showing for the Sharks with 25 points, Mitch Norton scored 16, and Duane Bailey added 13 as they now drop to 3-3.

It was a tough night for centre Alex Pledger who was held to six points on 3/10 shooting, Kay would also struggle to find a rhythm in his limited minutes.

Southland will have to re-group quickly as they travel to the Hawkes Bay to play the Taylor Hawks on Good Friday. Tomorrow will also feature the Canterbury Rams hosting the Taranaki Mountainairs which will be live on NZ Herald.
