Mills Albert Wellington Saints Announce Aaron Young as New Head Coach ahead of the 2025 Season on a multi-year deal

Wellington, New Zealand — 16th September 2024

The Mills Albert Wellington Saints are thrilled to announce the appointment of Aaron Young as the team's new head coach ahead of the 2025 Sal’s NBL season on a multi-year deal. Young, who brings a wealth of experience from both the Sal’s NBL and the Australian NBL, will lead the Saints into an exciting new chapter as the team looks to claim their 13th national title.

Aaron Young has long been regarded as one of the most respected coaches in New Zealand basketball. His previous successes, including guiding the Auckland Tuatara to multiple NZNBL finals and serving as an assistant coach for the prestigious Perth Wildcats in the Australian NBL, have demonstrated his ability to cultivate winning teams. Now, the Saints family will benefit from his experience, passion, and leadership.

As he steps into his new role with the Saints, Aaron Young shared his thoughts on what lies ahead:

"Saints family, I am stepping into this new chapter, embracing the expectations and challenges that this historic franchise has represented for over 40 years.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Jordan & the Mills family, our ties have run deep over the years, and they have always made an effort to make sure I am looked after.

This decision to collaborate was made with a clear commitment to align as competitors - we feel our experience and ideas link to a winning strategy.

We have communicated our vision and have already started the journey to title #13. See you in 2025 "
– Aaron Young

The Saints are looking forward to the new direction Aaron will take the team and how his tactical expertise will be applied to further elevate the team's performance. Following an impressive 2024 season, with significant wins both on and off the court, this new coaching direction ensures that the Saints are committed to bringing the championship back to Wellington.

“It’s with excitement we announce the hiring of our new Head Coach Aaron Young on a multi-year deal.

Aaron is one of the brightest young coaches in our country currently the lead assistant coach for Perth Wildcats and assistant coach for the Tall Blacks at last year’s World Cup.

He has a long history of developing young talent from his days at St. Kents in Auckland to his time in the NBL which excites us as a club to keep bringing through our young talent.

Someone I’m really looking forward to working with and I know our Mills Albert Saints family will love his commitment and determination to win.”

– Jordan Mills, CEO

In the coming months, the club will focus on building a formidable roster under Aaron’s leadership as the NZNBL free agency opens in November. The 2025 season promises to be a thrilling campaign, and the Saints organization is excited to give its loyal fans and sponsors another championship run to remember.”

With a coach of Aaron Young’s calibre now at the helm, the Saints are ready to write the next chapter in their storied history.

More updates on the team’s development will follow soon. Stay tuned as we march toward title thirteen!
