Troy McLean leaves retirement to run with the Saints for 2021
After seven years, the Saints 2021 season will see the return of Saints legend Troy McLean once again suiting up for the club after a great performance in the pre-season opener securing him a spot on the roster.
"I’m very pleased that Troy has succeeded in his goal to return to the NZ NBL as a player this year, having last played in 2014. The three-time NZNBL champion and all-time leader in games played for the Saints, Troy last season was an assistant coach on “Team No L’s Part II,” but despite focusing on his coaching in recent years, he has kept himself in outstanding shape."
"Troy fought hard throughout the preseason, culminating in an outstanding performance in the preseason games in Blenheim, earning his spot in the team. The modern game has evolved as such that it is well suited to Troy’s skill set. Adding Troy’s veteran know how will also be extremely valuable for our young group, and on court he remains a dangerous proposition."
Known for his excellent three-point shooting, McLean was a member of the Tall Blaks team that won a silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. In 2007, he returned to the Saints and went on to win two further championships with the team in 2010 and 2011. McLeans vast knowledge on and off the court played a vital role in helping the 2019 squad secure their undefeated season and 11th Championship as an assistant coach. 2021 will see McLean bring all that knowledge on court as a player once again.
