Zico Coronel re-signs for 2021
The Wellington Saints are proud to announce the re-signing of Head Coach, Zico Coronel with CEO Jordan Mills saying "We are excited to get Zico back on board for 2021, after spending time with the Saints as an assistant for a number of years he did wonders with Hawkes Bay over the past 2 seasons and we are lucky to have Zico back in the fold."
Coming off the back of a very impressive season as Head Coach in Hawkes Bay, leading the team to the finals in 2019, the Wellington Saints signed Coronel for the 2020 season but made the hard decision to sit out of the modified 2020 Showdown format.
"I am honoured to be re-signed as Head Coach by the club at the forefront of raising the standard for domestic basketball in New Zealand, the Wellington Saints, for the 2021 National Basketball League season. At the heart of the Saints, the Mills Family extols values such as sacrifice, hard work, player-centred, and aspiring to excellence, that I also identify with." said Coronel.
"We’d worked hard to construct an exciting roster, coaching staff and support staff for the 2020 season, and had looked forward to exhibiting high quality basketball for the wider Saints Family to enjoy. It was bitterly disappointing to lose this opportunity. The Mills Family and the Saints Family of sponsors have gone above and beyond in their support throughout the trials and tribulations of 2020, for which I am profoundly grateful, and definitely strengthened my resolve to return."
With a very inmpressive resume, the club are excited to see the way the team will gel and come together under his guidance. "He has one of the best Basketball minds in the country and always works tirelessly to improve his craft, which fits the mould of our clubs ethos and the way we want to play this coming season." says Mills.
On the future for the Saints, Coronel says "I look forward to recreating a high performance environment for 2021 and working to have players, coaches, support staff and the entire Saints Family join us as we collectively strive to better our lives, play beautiful synergetic basketball, and create future opportunities for all those involved."
